The first orange tree boxes were evolved in the 17th century at Versailles by André le Nôtre ; Louis XIV gardener.

Given the frequent movements required of the boxes as a result of the rigours of our climate (wintering of the orange trees) and the considerable weight involved, the orange tree boxes already needed to be very robust.

The popularity of exotic fruit has not diminished over the intervening centuries (lemon trees, palm trees, etc...)
